A Brief History of Pigeon Forge
Long before becoming one of America’s most cherished vacation destinations, Pigeon Forge served as a hunting ground for Native American tribes, primarily the Cherokee. The area’s unique name originates from the Little Pigeon River—named for the vast flocks of passenger pigeons that once roosted along its banks—and an iron forge built around 1817 by Isaac Love.
The Historic Old Mill, constructed in 1830, anchored the agrarian community by milling grain for local families and later generating the town's first electric power. For decades, Pigeon Forge remained a quiet mountain hamlet until the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934 brought the first wave of tourism to the region.
The development of the Parkway and the arrival of Dolly Parton’s signature theme park, Dollywood, in 1986 elevated Pigeon Forge into a vibrant world-class hub for family entertainment, outdoor exploration, and classic Southern hospitality.
